This is an article from my colleague Yasmin Nguyen, where he did a beautiful job tying in his life changing trip to Vietnam to the transformation one experiences from retirement.

Over the last month, I embarked on a life-changing journey back to Vietnam—my first visit in 47 years since I left as a child. This trip was more than a homecoming; it was a profound exploration of my heritage, my identity, and the parts of myself I’d long forgotten. I realized my roots weren’t something to hide but a deep reservoir of resilience, creativity, and beauty.

Reflecting on this experience, I was reminded of another pivotal journey many people undertake: retirement. Much like my return to Vietnam, entering retirement is a chance to step away from old definitions of success and rediscover who we truly are—beyond job titles and to-do lists. It’s about asking, “What really brings me joy, purpose, and fulfillment?”

Sure, financial preparedness is critical, but it’s only part of the picture. True transformation comes from planning the life you want to lead—one that honors your strengths, passions, and values. Here are a few lessons from my recent trip that might guide you on this path:

1. Honor Your Past

Standing in the fields of Sapa, I watched an elderly woman carrying firewood, struck by her perseverance and the echoes of sacrifice. For anyone approaching retirement, pausing to celebrate your own journey—the ups, downs, and hard-won lessons—can bring clarity about where you want to go next.

2. Rediscover What Makes You “You”

In Vietnam, I recognized my own traits mirrored in its people: hard work, creativity, and a contagious zest for life. Similarly, retirement can be an awakening of talents and passions you set aside while working. This is your chance to reconnect with what truly sparks joy.

3. Seek Simple Moments of Joy

Cooking with locals reminded me of the power of sharing simple, meaningful experiences. In retirement, don’t underestimate the value of slowing down. True contentment often comes from the smallest, most authentic moments.

4. Plan Beyond Finances

Just as my trip required logistical and emotional preparation, so does retirement. Partner with financial advisors, coaches, or mentors who can help you design a holistic plan. Think beyond numbers—what experiences and opportunities will help you thrive?

5. Envision Your Legacy

As I considered my parents’ sacrifices, I saw how each of us shapes a lasting impact. Retirement can be a time to define the legacy you want to leave—whether through family, community, or personal achievements that speak to your deepest values.

Ultimately, it’s never too late to rediscover who you are. Retirement isn’t an endpoint; it’s a new beginning—an invitation to live with more authenticity, joy, and purpose than ever before. How will you honor your journey and shape the next chapter?

I’d love to hear how you’re planning for your own transformation. Let’s connect and explore what it means to create a fulfilling, abundant future—one aligned with the whole of who you are.
